Notice some people wearing red braclets lately? Wonder if they mean something? They could be red beads, single red string, ect. (this my little 'red bracelet', I used my scanner because I can't find my digital camera right now. But I think it worked out all the same. My bracelet is actually just a red ribbon with a saftey pin, it works for me.)
Q) What does the red bracelet stand for? A) The red bracelet is a symbol of ana(anorexia, an eating disorder), many eating disordered individuals wear them.
Q) Why do they wear them? A) Mostly to identify each other and let others know that they aren't alone. It isn't the best idea to go out in public and say, "HEY EVERYONE! I HAVE AN EATING DISORDER!" It's something that you might want to keep to yourself and others who have eating disorders. But you can't always tell if someone has one, so by wearing the red bracelet you can help identify them. It can also be showing that you are pro-ana (pro anorexia), but not always.
Q) Does everyone who wears a red bracelet anorexic? A) NO! Not everyone who wears a red bracelet has an eating disorder. Don't be a fool and go thinking that, you could end up embarrassing yourself. A good way to find out is making eye contact with someone else who is wearing a red bracelet and point to yours, if they return the gesture than they're most likely ana.
Q) Could the red bracelet mean anything else? A) Of course, many people in the religion kabbalah wear a red bracelet, it means something very different to them.
IFOF is a term that means "identification friend or foe" most commonly used in the aircraft industry. It is a thing on an airplane that tells people reading the signal if they are a friend or foe. We now have a system of our own. I got this from another site: Have you ever wondered if the skinny girl you see has an ED (A or M)? And proud of it? You so desperately want to ask, or even try to make friends but are scared? Well, no more ... since we have our ribbon "Ana is a lifestyle..." and its red.
I propose that we all get a red beaded bracelet. You can make it or buy them. Wear it daily or when you go out to secretly say that you are proud to be pro-ana or proud to have an ED that is. Anytime you see someone wearing a red beaded bracelet, capture their eye contact and point to your bracelet, and if they return the same point to theirs ... then they are ED friendly. If not, then its just someone whom is wearing one.
As for those who are older and feel silly wearing a beaded bracelet, wear a red t-shirt every Monday or when you go out on Mondays.
Please pass this along to every pro ED clubs, forums, websites (secrets/public) for we need to be known widespread secretly amongst us. So, copy/paste everyone!!! (that was copied and pasted from, http://www.fading-obsession.com/thinspo/red-bracelet.php )
Not everyone knows about the red bracelet, so spread the word! And if you have a red bracelet, post a picture on your blog to help raise awareness! (and please send the picture to me too so I can keep supporting everyone)
I used to be on the FO forums alllll the time. I'm gonna get a red bracelet now. Thanks for this post.
Really? I used to obsessively check that website all the time, way before I knew about the blogs on xanga and all.
No problem for the info<3 just spreading the word. :D
I lov the bracelet dea.. it may help me stay strong and stick to my "less fattening eating"
and it may help a co-worker come out and talk to me about this subject. She wears one and has gone from 170 to 105-110 soooo I am guessing she may be ana encouraged also. I hope she will talkt to me, because honestly she has taken her dieting too far. She can't function @ work. I am glad.. that I can not take ana too far.... I know I may get another friend in struggle out of this bracelet.
God Bless everyone stay strong.
BTW~ I have found that "Surmi", or imitation Crab has helped keeoing me going and is very low in fat and cals. One small peice has more protein that eating a small amount tof yogurt or cereal or veggies.
Try it! Protein is important so keep at least a small amount in your daily intake however small it is.
Wow how good the bracelet.I go and buy an nice one right now. I am pro ana but still on the heavy weight, do you think that i have the right to wear it too then?
XXX and very nice blog :))
I've been "possessed" with ana since i was only 8 years old, which i know is rare, but i was a figure skater and ballerina. I am now 21, 5'6" and 103 lbs. I wish everyone would come out and wear their red bracelets too. Even if you're in treatment, or trying to recover it's a good way to meet other people in with ana/mia, and we should all support each other in all ways, always.
@jenny14071983 - you should totally wear urs, ur pro ana just the same as the skinny girls! remember, some day we will be one of them!
Red string = Kabalah. You know that right :p ?
Actually it depends on which wrist it's on, and even then it doesn't always mean Kabalah. But the girls in my pictures that are wearing the bracelets DO have eating disorders, so that's why I put them up.
I love your site! I was actually thinking about starting a "pro ana/mia awareness" group on facebook, to let people know they're not alone...I'm new to pro ana but the support i've gotten so far is amazing!! i was also wondering if you would let me use the pic of your red bracelet...it would be a great addtion! stay strong <3
